Retainers

Hawley Retainers

  • The most durable retainer type, hawley retainers are metal and acrylic

  • Sometimes we can add springs to the inside of these retainers for minor tooth movement

  • Because these retainers do not cover the top surface of your teeth, they do not protect against clenching and grinding

Essix Retainers

  • These clear, plastic retainers cover the top surface of the teeth, so they protect your teeth similar to a night guard

  • As they absorb the wear of your bite, they wear out and eventually need to be replaced

Vivera Retainers

  • These are durable, clear, plastic retainers that come in a pack of 4

  • These are good for patients who grind heavily or may be more prone to losing retainers

Fixed Retainers

  • These retainers are glued onto the back of your teeth to prevent any movement

  • Anything glued to the teeth can break, and fixed retainers are no exception. When these break, they can put unintended forces on the teeth that can cause them to move when you least expect it. For this reason, Dr. Frisch only recommends using these if they are what is best for your bite.
